Takayama has been transformed into a breathtaking winter wonderland this year! With heavy snowfall covering the rooftops of Takayama Old Town and the majestic Japanese Alps in the distance, it feels like a scene from a postcard.

Freshly fallen snow creates a truly magical atmosphere, blanketing the streets and dusting the roof tiles of our machiya homes. Below are a few photos from the other day, featuring our private Japanese holiday houses: ‘Ichika’ Machiya House, ‘Aonoha’ Machiya House, and ‘Yukinoha’ Machiya House.

If you’re planning to visit, please take care—there’s still plenty of snow (yuki ga tsumotteru 雪が積もってる)! Roads may be icy, so drive safely and ensure your vehicle is properly equipped for winter conditions. For those exploring on foot, we recommend wearing waterproof shoes and a warm jacket.

As the snow quietly blankets the town, there’s a special Japanese phrase that captures this serene moment: 雪見 (yukimi)—the peaceful joy of watching the snow fall. We hope you take a moment to enjoy this magical season in Takayama! Stay warm, travel safe, and enjoy the winter beauty. ☃️
