'Ichika' Machiya House: A beautifully renovated traditional Japanese holiday home (vacation rental) showcasing architectural elements unique to Takayama. Conveniently located just a 1-minute walk from Takayama Station and a short stroll from Takayama Old Town, this vacation rental provides easy access to all of Takayama's popular attractions.

Originally constructed during the Meiji Period (early 1900s), the exterior of this machiya house features classic Takayama architectural details. These include 'gobun nuri' (white-painted exposed beam ends) and 'mushikomado' windows. The first floor walls are crafted in earthen plaster by a renowned local 'sakan shokunin' (plaster craftsman).

Step through the 'noren' entrance curtains to discover a spacious ground floor that artfully incorporates the interplay of shadow and light. The warm, dark wood of the architecture is perfectly balanced by natural light filtering through the 'tenmado' ceiling windows. Gather around the 'irori'-inspired dining table, reminiscent of the sunken hearths found in traditional Shirakawago houses, or unwind in a luxurious hinoki wood bathtub.

This machiya house offers three bedrooms, ideal for family and friend groups. Two classic tatami rooms are available on both floors, each accommodating up to two futon beds. The second floor features an additional Western-style bedroom with high ceilings and a spacious king-size bed.

Takayama-style Machiya House Nestled in the lush mountains of the Japanese Alps and just a minute's walk from Takayama Station, 'Ichika' machiya house features exterior walls adorned with plaster art by renowned local plasterer Syuhei Hasado. The "mushiko-mado" windows, traditionally on the second floor of machiya townhouses, are creatively placed on the first floor, blending modern design with traditional elements.

1F Japanese Tatami Room The 1F tatami room can be used as an additional bedroom, a place to store belongings or stretch out and relax. Keep the sliding ‘fusuma’ doors open to create an spacious room that connects to the living room, or closed for complete privacy.

2F Japanese Tatami Room The upstairs Japanese-style tatami room features an original wooden beam stretching across the ceiling, inviting tatami flooring, and large ‘fusuma’ sliding partitions. Close the fusuma to create a private retreat, or open them to let natural light brighten up the space.

Futon Bedding Since ‘fusuma’ are traditionally thick partitions made of washi paper, they can also serve as blackout shades, ensuring a restful night’s sleep. When staying with a large group of family and friends, up to two futon beds can be set up in this space.

Shirakawa-go & Hida Furukawa From Takayama Station, you’ll have great access to explore various parts of the Hida region, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go, renowned for its picturesque landscape of traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Hida Furukawa is also nearby, celebrated for its beautiful townscape, featuring charming storehouses and canals filled with colorful koi fish.

Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Takayama?: No, this is not a hotel in Takayama. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Takayama!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
