‘Aonoha’ Machiya House is a charming private holiday home located just a minute's walk from Takayama Station. This spacious 103㎡ (1111ft²) machiya house showcases architectural features typical of traditional Takayama-style machiya homes, along with elements inspired by the thatched-roof ‘gassho-zukuri’ farmhouses found in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawago.

As you step through the noren curtains, you’ll enter the ‘koutei,’ or light court, where an impressive 9-meter tall original artwork by renowned local plaster craftsman Shuhei Hasado greets you. The light court is designed with ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light, highlighting the wooden beams that stretch across the ceiling, reminiscent of Shirakawago’s iconic farmhouses.

The house features a luxurious bathroom equipped with a hinoki wood bathtub and dry sauna, crafted from hinoki wood sourced from Takayama. On the top floor, the dining room boasts floor-to-ceiling glass windows that bathe the area in soft light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Each room is equipped with floor heating and air conditioning, ensuring a comfortable stay throughout the year.

Accommodating up to five guests, this machiya house includes two bedrooms. The first floor features a classic Japanese bedroom adorned with tatami flooring and up to three futon beds. The second floor offers a Western-style bedroom with high ceilings, a spacious king-size bed, a sofa, and a desk.

Artist: Shuhei Hasado: Born in Takayama city, Shuhei Hasado is a local Takayama 'sakan shokunin' (craftsman) who specializes in traditional Japanese plastering. You can not only see the work of Shuhei Hasado on the exterior and interior walls of traditional Japanese architecture, but in original artwork such as the one found here.
'Yukinoha' machiya house features a 9-meter tall 'sakan' artwork decorating the wall of the light court, or 'koutei'. Inspired by the colorful banners that decorate the floats of the famous Takayama Festival, the artwork reflects Takayama’s traditions and lush nature. Hasado uses his skills in the traditional craft to create artwork which convey the beauty of Japanese architecture and tradition. Using local materials such as earth, sand, lime, and straw, enjoy his stunning 'sakan' artwork during your stay at ‘Yukinoha’ machiya house.

1 min. Walk from Takayama Station With Takayama Station just a short walk away, a hub for trains and express buses, you’ll be able to easily explore the Hida region. You'll have great access to the World Heritage Site "Shirakawa-go" with its gassho-style thatched roof houses, the picturesque town of "Hida-Furukawa," and the stunning Northern Alps. Additionally, "Kamikochi" offers trekking along the clear streams of the Azusa River.

Inspired by Shirakawago's Houses "Aonoha" machiya house draws inspiration from Shirakawago's historic thatched roof houses. These traditional farmhouses, built in the "gassho-zukuri" style, feature high, slanted ceilings resembling hands clasped in prayer. Inside, wooden beams crisscross overhead, supporting the lofty structure. The design creates a spacious atmosphere, while skylight windows bathe the entire machiya in soft, natural light.

Is this a hotel in Takayama?: No, this is not a hotel in Takayama. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Takayama!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
