A short walk from THE MACHIYA HOTEL TAKAYAMA is "Takayama Jinya," a remnant of the Edo period (1603 - 1868). The Takayama Jinya used to house the offices of government officials when Takayama city was under the direct control of the samurai shogunate. If you're an early riser, stop by the Jinya-mae morning market, where you can buy fresh local vegetables and other goods while enjoying the local atmosphere. It's right by the Miyagawa River, which showcases cherry blossoms in the spring, fresh greenery in the summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snow in winter.

Walk a little further to explore the historical streets of Takayama Old Town, which are a must-see when visiting the city. It's the perfect area to enjoy Takayama's unique gourmet & traditional Japanese sake breweries, craftwork shops, famous Hida-gyu beef, and more. The Miyagawa Morning Market, held every morning along the Miyagawa River, is also where you can enjoy a taste of local life. Fresh produce and local delicacies, souvenirs, restaurants, and more. We also recommend the Higashiyama Trail, where you can take a tranquil walk of an area dotted with traditional temples, beautiful greenery.

As THE MACHIYA HOTEL TAKAYAMA is a short walk from Takayama Station, you'll have the best access to all of Hida Takayama's most picturesque sightseeing attractions.

From Takayama Station, take a direct bus to Shirakawa-go Village, a World Heritage Site famous for its gassho-zukuri thatched traditional houses. Kamikochi is a scenic mountain area where you can enjoy beautiful nature, and makes for an easy day trip. Hourly buses from Takayama Station will take you to Oku Hotaka Ropeway, where you'll have an amazing aerial view of the Hotake Mountain Range. We also recommend taking the train to Hida Furukawa, famous for its beautiful scenery of carp swimming in the Setogawa River, which flows by the traditional white-wall storehouses.
