Hello from Takayama!
If you’re visiting Japan in mid-April and would still like to experience the cherry blossoms, we highly recommend adding Takayama to your itinerary!
Compared to big cities like Tokyo and Nagoya, the cherry blossoms in Takayama tend to bloom later, usually reaching their peak in mid-April. In higher elevations, the blossoms may even arrive a bit later.
Some of the best spots to enjoy the sakura in Takayama include: the iconic Nakabashi Bridge, a red bridge that connects the old town, Shiroyama Park, located just a short uphill walk from the popular Old Town area, and around Takayama Jinya, the historical government office from the Edo period. Under the clear blue sky, the cherry blossoms in full bloom create a picturesque scene, almost like a painting. In the evening, the cherry blossom are illuminated, offering a magical and enchanting atmosphere to enjoy the blossoms.

While you’re enjoying the sakura, be sure to try local specialties like Hida beef sushi and our personal favorite, mitarashi dango (sweet soy-glazed rice dumplings). These traditional treats add to the unique charm of Takayama in spring.
Experience the warmth of Takayama in the springtime, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of cherry blossoms while soaking in the rich history and culture of the city!
