Get a taste of Edo-era Japan in Takayama City’s historical district “Takayama Old Town”!
At the heart of Takayama City lies the historic district known as “Takayama Old Town.” This area, which flourished as a merchant town during the Edo period (1603-1868), is lined with beautifully preserved buildings dating from the Edo through mid-Meiji eras (early to late 1800s). Strolling through its streets truly feels like stepping back in time!
The highlight of Takayama Old Town is Sanmachi Suji, a charming area featuring three main streets that display stunning Edo-period architecture. As you wander these charming lanes, you’ll discover:
Venture a little further beyond Sanmachi Suji to find:
This well-preserved district, recognized as a Historically Significant Traditional Building Preservation Area, offers visitors a unique glimpse into Japan’s past. While some refer to Takayama as “Little Kyoto” due to its historic charm, it’s important to note that Takayama has its own distinct character as a former castle town. Unlike Kyoto, which was an imperial capital, Takayama developed around a feudal castle, giving it a unique atmosphere that reflects its samurai heritage.
Various events and matsuri are held throughout the year, but especially during the summer!
There are seven breweries in Old Town. You can identify them by the enormous “cedar ball” hanging under the building’s eaves. Stop in to sample some unique locally brewed sake.
Takayama City is famous for its wagyu beef known as Hidagyu, so be sure to try some beef skewers or beef nigiri. We also recommend Takayama’s street food, such as takoyaki (fried octopus dough balls), yukiguni egg pudding, and bite-sized taiyaki (fish-shaped pastries with sweet or savory filling). Read about these delicious recommendations and where to find them here!
Japanese Tip: Don’t get takoyaki mixed up with taiyaki! Remember that tako means “octopus” and sounds like “taco.”
Held on the first Sunday of every month from April to October, you’ll find a variety of local products such as handmade woodworks (such as tableware or furniture), recycled kimonos, and framed art!
Event Name: 我楽多市 Garakuta City
