One of three tea districts in Kanazawa city, which remains active to this day.
Kazuemachi Chaya District is one of 3 tea districts in Kanazawa City, Japan. Established during the early Meiji period (1868–1912), the traditional wooden architecture create a nostalgic atmosphere. Although the Higashi Chaya Tea District tend to be more famous in tour books, we recommend Kazuemachi if you are looking to avoid the big crowds when deciding on things to do in Kanazawa.
There are still tea houses that remain active in Kazuemachi Chaya District, where geiko women entertain customers with conversation, games, songs, and dance. During evening walks along the historical architecture near the river, you may hear the beautiful melodies of shamisen, drums, and singing.
Although there are no specific hours for entering Kazuemachi Tea District, be sure to check the hours if there is a certain shop you are interested in. Most shops will be open between 10:00~18:00, but be sure to double check as some stores may have differing hours.
Otherwise, the traditional architecture and stone paved streets make the area a beautiful spot for an early morning walk or quick photo shoot to commemorate your vacation as the city is just waking if you are an early bird!
Kazuemachi Chaya District is within walking distance of Higashi Chaya District, which makes visiting both a breeze. If you are coming from Kanazawa Station, we recommend taking the Kanazawa Loop Bus to “Hashiba-cho” Bus Stop, then walking to the area. You can also take the JR Bus to the Higashiya Chaya District, then walk from there. While visiting, we also recommend stopping be nearby Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle Park, only a 10 minute walk away.
